Former boxer Evander Holyfield, five times heavyweight world champion, became a meme in times of pandemic of the new coronavirus. A montage where a mask appears lying on his face refers to the episode where rival Mike Tyson tore a piece from the boxer’s ear in a confrontation on June 28, 1997. This Tuesday, the American reacted to the image and, in a friendly tone, showed that he has two ears. He also took the opportunity to teach how to put on the mask correctly to prevent the virus that transmits Covid-19.
– What do you think about that? Look at this. They act like I have only one ear. I have two. I’ll show you …One, two (put on the mask). What do you think of that? Stay safe out there – he joked.
Before the fateful fight on June 28, 1997, the two boxers met in the ring in November 1996, and Holyfield won by technical knockout in the 11th round. Therefore, the rematch generated high expectations. Then world champion, the boxer would put his belts on the line against the legendary Mike Tyson.
The challenger came from a four-game winning streak since he left prison in 1994 when he finished serving a sentence for sexual abuse. The rematch was unexpectedly won when Mike Tyson was disqualified at the end of the third round by biting and tearing off part of Evander Holyfield’s ear. Nowadays, the two are friends.
