Lewis Hamilton is the highest-paid British sportsman of all time, according to the list of the 1,000 wealthiest people in the UK, drawn up by the “Sunday Times” newspaper 32 years ago.
With assets worth 224 million pounds (about R $ 1.6 billion), of which 37 million pounds (R $ 260 million) in the last year of his contract with Mercedes, the six-time champion surpassed David Beckham as the best sportsman paid inactivity since when the ex-player left the lawns in 2013, he had a fortune estimated at 200 million pounds (R $ 1.4 billion).
The current contract earns roughly £ 40 million a year for the pilot between salary and sponsorships and ends at the end of this year. The renewal with Mercedes is close to being announced.
Hamilton even became involved in a controversy over his financial operations in 2017. According to an investigation by British television “BBC”, the Mercedes driver allegedly used fictional companies in the British Virgin Islands, the Isle of Man and Guernsey to avoid paying taxes for 3.3 million pounds (R $ 23 million) in the purchase of a Bombardier CL605 Challenge model aircraft, in 2013, valued at 25 million pounds (R $ 175 million). With an eye on a more sustainable life, Hamilton ended up selling the aircraft in 2019.
In another list in the newspaper survey, that of “Young Rich People” (those who are under 30), sportspeople occupy 18 of the 50 positions, with Real Madrid player Gareth Bale at the top. The Welsh’s assets are valued at 114 million pounds (R $ 810 million). Of the 18 sportsmen, only one is not a football player. It is boxer Anthony Joshua, who appears just behind Bale, with 107 million pounds (R $ 760 million).
